Bedlam Reigns
Boxing week (no we don't just have a day of it any more), started off with a bang.
We did not have enough staff which is usual these days and had even less then usual today because some were off and some were sick.
So we ended up with record number of customers and only about 1/2 the staff we needed. Can you see a problem here?
By the time I left, there was stuff everywhere to be put away in shopping carts, and on the floor and in aisles. I spent 1/2 my shift not in my department but at the front cash registers ringing through shoppers.
Then I also ended up covering 4 departments at once while others were on tills or on breaks. Made for some excitement when I had 3 customers waiting for my help, another on the phone and being paged to come to the front to pick up my returns. Hello, can you say insane?
It should be almost as crazy again tomorrow, at least by Thursday more staff will be in.
People were loading up on things because they were saving a few cents on each one. But tell me, who needs 15 boxes of toothpaste, 30 bars of hand soap, etc. the few cents you saved, you lost in the gas you used to get there and now you have to find storage space in your home for all this stuff until you can use it up.
Then there are also those people who line up on the 26th to return what they got for Christmas. Now unless the thing is broken or the wrong size I would never return a gift. I mean someone took the time to find that item for you. It's a gift not payment on a demand.
It different then wedding gifts, which you coud get too many of one thing and want to return the extras. I can see that, but Christmas and birthday presents I think are different. When I give a gift, I have put thought and love into the giving and it would break my heart to know someone returned it because they didn't want it. I mean really, why give something that is going to be returned anyway?
Giving requires that I investigate what that person would like or need or enjoy, even if I give a gift card, I still find out where that person likes to shop so they aren't stuck with a card they won't use either.
Anyway, that's giving as I see it.
