Falling Further

Later That Same Day…

In a country where the stores seem to rush you through to the next season, you would not think it would be very difficult to find those boxes of advent calendar chocolates on November 1st. I did see them this morning at Wal-Mart, but did not want them then. This evening I went out on a mission, to find those chocolates at a local store.

My first stop was the nearby Safeway. Not on the shelves yet.

Next stop was the Shopper’s Drug Mart. They did have some Christmas chocolates out, but not the ones I was looking for. My son suggested I buy the nice-looking box of chocolate liqueurs, but no, we went home with a simple box of assorted chocolates. The waiting family seemed to cope with the disappointment, mostly because I came home with something chocolate and also the movie, “The Three Amigos”.

This morning, I also bought our new tree.

After 14 years, we finally decided to bury the old tree. It was too big for our living room anyway: picture the tree in the Griswold’s home in National Lampoon’s “Christmas Vacation”. Now we have a cute 4-foot tree, standing on a small round table in front of the window. No, it is not decorated yet, just up. Mom would be proud. She is the same woman who listens to Christmas music from July 1st to December 31st every year. She would listen to it all year round, but Dad says, “No.”

Now Dad does love Christmas, but when you have to practically move out of your home because your wife has decorated every corner with lights, village pieces, trains and such, it does tend to make you a little less enthusiastic.

At least he pretends to fuss in public, but when no one is looking, his eyes light up at the tinsel and and bright colours and I know he is remembering some special Christmas.
