The Quilt
This is a story which started about a month or so ago. I did not like the cover we had for our bed and began looking for something which was more durable and warmer for the winter.
I hunted in stores, checked out the costs of a duvet and possibly just stuffing it myself. I checked into buying 2 flat sheets of the right size and color but could not find any at any price. Finally, I conceeded that the only way to find the right size and color would be to start from scratch.
So I began by measuring the bed (not all beds are created equal) and discovered which size I wanted. With this information in my hot little hands, I put pencil to paper and got out my calculater… well I tried to find my calculator and ended up turning on the computer and using that one. With much figuirng and scribbling I finally figured out how much material I needed for this monstrosity.
Next it was off to the store to find the right shades – easier said then done. But at long last I was able to come home all flush with excitement. Bags of stuffing and metres of material. Now as for the final design.
Out came the paper again to figure out exactly how to cut and fit toegether the fabric I had to make it the right size in the end. After much fiddling I came up with a plan.
Next it was placing the right pieces together and stitching away. At long last I had 2 large pieces which would make the front and back sides of my quilt.
Now, how would I put the thing together with the stuffing? I could not hire a hall to place it on the floor…. so I ended up draping the thing over the bed, lining it up and pinning while trying to not pin it to the bed.
It is a heavy monstrosity and is very warm having it piled around you while trying to sew.
So now I have it stitched around the outside and the next step is to stich it every so many inched across the quilt to keep the batting in place then just to stitch the thing around the edges. It sounds like I am almost done but in reality, I am avoinding the next step because it will be quite difficult to keep everything straight while sewing across the thing….. sigh….. well it’s not winter yet.
